World’s toughest runs – the ÖtillÖ, Swedish Archepelago, Sweden
Share
If you’re absolutely mad or just ready for your next challenge, then take a look at the ÖtillÖ, notable for being one of the most challenging swim runs on the calendar. There are only 120 team slots available, so make sure you’ve got some qualifiers under your belt, or try your luck in the random draw. Either way, you’re going to want to know more about what you’re in for, and what sort of preparation you’ll need to survive this crazy race. The ÖtillÖ is held on an archipelago off Stockholm, Sweden. You’ll need to prepare carefully as this race has strictly enforced cut off times, so there’s no room to lag if you’re weaker in swimming or running. In fact cut offs are so tight that most entrants make the swims in their running shoes. The race is a solid 75km long, with 65 of those being covered over 26 islands. The other 10km are made up in the cold Baltic waters, averaging temperatures of 10-15 C. Racing teams must make the distance, swapping between running and swimming for about 12 hours until you reach the end, keeping an eye on the cut off times. Sound challenging enough for you? If that isn’t a tough enough prospect, you need to make sure your partner keeps up. There is not allowed to be any more than 50m between you on land and 5m between you in the water. That means sticking together and coaching each other through, especially if you have strengths in different areas. We’re not done. In case this is sounding easy to you, here’s an extra challenge. The race is totally self-navigated. Each racer is required to bring a waterproof map and compass with them to keep track of the course. You’ll also need to carry a waterproof pressure bandage and a whistle. We’d recommend getting a small backpack to tuck under your wetsuit. The ÖtillÖ is a race worth doing. The 50-odd transitions you’ll make between land and sea will tire you, the drag from running in wet suits will slow you and the chill will make you miserable. But as always, the world’s toughest runs are called that for a reason, aren't they? One more on the list to conquer!
