Before you click ‘post’, there are a few of things to think about before posting your running social media.
Who’s keeping track?
If you’re in the habit of sharing your GPS maps of your run route, you may be leaving yourself vulnerable to an unwanted person on your trails. Keeping a regular route is one thing, but letting your followers know that you’re at the same place at the same time every week could leave you compromised. Reflect honestly – do you know every one of your social media connections well enough to give them that information?
Who are you running for?
Challenging yourself to meet a new PR, or ploughing through another week’s worth of training are admirable goals. If you’re driven by your own sense of motivation, you may not be posting about them and waiting for responses. On the other hand, running social media feeds like up-to-the-minute live broadcasts could indicate you’re seeking validation from others. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating successes, remarking on tough runs (we all have them) or sharing a funny story. Pause before you post and ask yourself what you’re hoping to get out of sharing.
Choose your audience
The final point to ponder is this: have you ever posted a running update and noticed acquaintances or relatives passing uninformed comments? Does it rub you the wrong way to hear people pass judgement on your times or how ‘you’re going to wear out your knees’ by running so much? If you want to avoid the unhelpful commentary, keep your posts to running social media platforms like Strava. They’re designed for runners to share their experiences.
