Missing a day of school because of too much snow used to feel so exciting. As an adult, missing a run because of too much snow can be downright frustrating. It’s tempting to just get out there anyway – it can’t be that bad, right? – but there are so many reasons why you should avoid running in snow. Most of them involve dodging painful injuries.
When there’s ice, running surfaces become slippery. The depth and firmness of the snow can vary wildly, and it’s very difficult to read. The result? Hesitant foot placement, which leads to unstable ankles and knees. If you land on a patch of ice and slip, it could lead to sprains, an ACL tear or even a fracture.
Forcing your body to work in extremely cold temperatures comes with a host of health risks. Frostbite can occur in a much shorter time than anticipated, which can lead to painful skin at best, and amputation at worst. Running in snow and the associated cold air can wreak havoc on asthma sufferers. There is even a generalised pattern of increased risk of heart attack and sudden death in winter. It’s suggested that the heart is put under strain when it tries to pump enough blood through arteries that are constricted from the cold.
Snow changes the dynamics of your running environment. Branches may fall under the weight of snow. Cars can lose traction easily, and have reduced capacity to brake. Those hidden ice patches can cause serious damage if you fall and hit your head, or land awkwardly on your tailbone. Running in snow invites unpredictability and very high risks.
Avoid these risks by finding alternative training methods on snowy days. Head to the gym for some cross-training, or jump on the exercise bike at home. If you are desperate to get out into the cold, try a change of pace. Strap on some snowshoes or go walking instead. The weather will change soon enough and you’ll be back on the road in no time.
