Running clubs are a fun way to combine a healthy activity with friendly company. You don’t need to rely on others like team sports, but it can be great to have some like-minded people along for the journey. There are a lot of benefits to starting your own running club if you can’t find one in your local area that suits you. Here’s some simple steps you can take.
Gather a friend or two, and choose a name
Find a couple of running partners to run with your regularly and you’ve got yourself a running club. Choose a name that reflects the group, or a specific name that will make you easy to find (‘Manchester Masters Running Club’ or ‘Swansea Sprinters’, for example).
Help people find you
Establish a regular meeting place and time (weekends are popular). Publicise it on your social media and/or website. Websites can be very simple and affordable to establish. Give club contact details and any running club rules. Use social media to let new runners know how to find you, and update about any last-minute changes.
Welcome new members
It’s really important to reach out to new members of running clubs. It can feel a little awkward to approach a group of people that you don’t know. Nominate one person to keep an eye out for new faces each week.
Keep it free and social
While you’re in growth mode, make it extremely simple for people to join you. Don’t charge a fee or implement too many rules. If you’re looking to build a strong team culture, schedule monthly or quarterly social events. Depending on the demographics of your running club, you could host BBQs, pub nights or other outings.
The more the merrier
As you build up a sizeable running club, you can use the numbers to negotiate discounts for running related equipment. If you regularly socialise at the same café or restaurant, ask if there are table discounts available.
Some running clubs have team shirts that help identify group members. This can be especially fun if a group of you from the club enter a public race together. It can boost morale and publicise the club, attracting even more members.
