Relax from a busy week, get some exercise and discover the most scenic views of the UK countryside at the same time? Yes please! Check out these 8 National Trust routes. They’ll take you through hill and dale, often on well-maintained trails.
Derwent Water, Cumbria
The Octavia Hill walk is a pleasant 3.6 miles along the Derwent Water. Enjoy plenty of peaceful parkland on this National Park run, and soak up the history of Brandelhow, the birthplace of the National Trust in the area.
Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland
There are so many options to take through Hadrian’s Wall Country. Try the 8-mile loop from Housesteads to Steel Rigg. It takes in plenty of Roman archelogy and offers a moderately hilly trail.
White Cliffs of Dover, Kent
Start at the Visitor Centre for the White Cliffs and cover the two miles out to the South Foreland Lighthouse and return. This is one of the most iconic National Trust runs that’s suited to walkers and runners alike.
Lyme Trust, Cheshire
If you prefer the company of others, join in the monthly 10K untimed jaunt starting at the Timber Yard café. It’s a mixed trail with pebbles, grass and even the odd stile, so it’s one to take with eyes open.
Speke Hall, Liverpool
This is a short 1.5km (just under a mile) circuit that takes in Speke Hall gardens and surrounds. Start at the Speke Hall café and follow the signs. Enjoy doing laps of the course to see new things with each pass.
Gribbin Head, Fowey, Cornwall
A moderate 4-mile run along some of the UK’s most picturesque coastlines. Take in the wildflowers gently bobbing in the sea breeze, and dip your toes in the water as you run along the sand.
Sheringham Park, Norfolk
This location has a plethora of walks and running trails to choose from. The National Trust runs here are varied in length, and cover both the parks and the coastal edges.
Porthdinllaen walk, Morfa Nefyn, Gwynedd
This 2.5-mile loop takes you along the coast before turning inland to return to the start. This historical walk explores sea defences, abandoned brickworks and the local Inn. Run along sand, rocky pools and grass for a varied and fascinating experience.
