How to stay on track with new years fitness resolutions

The new year always brings around the desire to improve ourselves. This quest for personal greatness often focusses on weight loss or increasing fitness goals. If you’re feeling keen to get off to a strong start in the new year (and want to see those results beyond the first 2 weeks of January) then check out these great tips for keeping on track with your new years resolutions.

Write it down and keep track – Goals are just dreams until they’re written down in measurable numbers. Get specific about what you want to achieve, and by when. How many laps? How far? How fast? The more detail you can put down about what the end state looks like, the better you’ll be able to measure if you’re getting closer to it.

Little steps, big results – Now you’ve got your goals laid out in front of you, it’s time to set your path to success. If you want to achieve a 5k run by June, work backwards and calculate how often you’ll need to run each week, and how far. If you want to be able to deadlift 100kg but you can only do 50kg, plan to increase the weights by 5kg increments until you nail it.

Ask for help – If you’re new to health and fitness, joining the gym might be intimidating. Make sure to ask for help. It’s critical. If you don’t know what you’re doing you could hurt yourself or others around you. Getting familiar with a new endeavour is worth doing so you don’t waste time or let bad habits creep in from day one.

Mix it up – If repetition bores you, make sure to mix up your activities throughout the week. If you’re aiming for overall fitness or a weight loss, you might like to schedule a run, a circuit and some light weights each week. It’s still covering your bases but it keeps things interesting.

Reevaluate – Check in with your original goals every 3 months. Are you still happy to be working on them? Have your interests or priorities changed? Maybe you’ve already exceeded the goals you set (awesome!). If that’s the case, there’s no harm in changing your direction, just make sure you write down your new goals.

Celebrate – Every time you have a win in the gym or on the track, celebrate! You’re doing an amazing job and getting closer to your goal every day. Reward yourself with new gear or another treat. You deserve it.
