You’re psyched to get out there and train. You’ve got the gear, you’ve got the motivation of the next big race coming up. The only thing that’s letting you down is your own body! Injuries are a common part of running for both amateurs and professionals.
It’s incredibly frustrating to feel your progress is being held back by injury. We invest so much time and effort correcting our form and technique. The hours we spend out on the trail, track or road feel like they’ve been wasted when injury strikes. It’s easy to let one rest day turn into two, and suddenly you’ve lost your groove.
Don’t let injury keep you down. If your confidence and dedication to the sport is strong, there is no way you’ll let a pesky injury get you off track. Consider your options. Are there alternative training methods you can employ while you’re off your feet? Maybe you can use the down time to research the track map of your next meet or connect with other runners in your area.
Studies have shown that regularly spending time mentally rehearsing a race can help performance, with no extra training at all. Try it! Imagine every detail of the race, and visualise yourself crossing the finish line. It sounds a tad obsessive, we know, but in fact it’s a common strategy our Olympians use to get the edge over the competition. If your injury is severe enough to put you off the whole idea for a minute, it’s ok to take a mental break altogether, for a short, predetermined time. Maybe get to that weekend job you’ve been putting off or get the extra sleep you need to help your body heal. Just get back out there once your rest deadline passes – don’t give up!
Some of the greatest athletes of all time have been struck down by injury, only to come back stronger and faster than ever. We know that we can overcome and reach our running potential, too. And perhaps the best advice of all is to do as much as you can to prevent injuries in the first place. Do the correct warm up stretches, eat and drink the best recovery meals and fluids, perfect your training and running techniques and buy the best running gear you can to suit your body.
