Energy boosting smoothies for runners are a quick and effortless way to take in the protein and complex carbs they need to fuel runs (and recover from them, too). The smoothies can be made the night before if the idea of using a blender before sunrise isn’t well received. Try one of these combinations before your next run. Watermelon Wonder Smoothie Try this cooling smoothie after a hot run. Combine 2 cup of chilled watermelon and ½ cup of yoghurt with 1 cup of ice. Blend until smooth. Watermelon can be frozen ahead of time for an even cooler drink. Mango Sunshine Smoothie This is one of our favourite great energy boosting smoothies for runners. Add diced and chilled mango, a banana, ½ cup of yoghurt and 1 cup of orange juice to a blender with a few ice cubes. Blend until bright and delicious. The carbs give quick fuel and the yoghurt provides the protein. Tropical Banana and Pineapple Smoothie This is a very light and refreshing smoothie that will hit the spot after a run in warm weather. This one is short on protein, so consider adding unflavoured protein powder or serving with a tub of yoghurt. Add 1 cup of pineapple juice to 4 ice cubes, 1 cup fresh diced pineapple and 1 chopped banana. Blend until smooth. Purple Power Smoothie You can rely on these energy boosting smoothies for runners to get you through any tough morning. If you need a little antioxidant boost, this is the smoothie for you. Combine 1/3 cup frozen blueberries, 1/3 cup frozen strawberries, 1 banana and 1 cup of yoghurt with 2/3 cup of ice. Blend until smooth and serve. Fresh berries can be used if available. Peanut Butter Recovery Smoothie This is a cheeky smoothie that ticks all the boxes: it has carbs, plenty of healthy fats and proteins and it tastes phenomenal. Ready? Add 1 cup of chocolate or vanilla ice cream to ¼ cup milk and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. Blend until combined. Definitely save this one for after your long run.
