9 amazing marathons outside of London

The London Marathon is a high-profile race, but it’s not the only UK marathon to be held every year. If you missed a spot at the starting line this year, don’t despair. There are plenty of other races you can put your mind to instead.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon

Run along the Mersey River and rock out with more than 30 live bands stationed along the route. Yes, that’s more than one band per mile. The finishing line comes with its own party at Albert Dock.

Baxter’s Loch Ness Marathon

Try to spot Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, as you run past the iconic Loch. Head across the river and into Inverness for the big finish. This is an incredibly scenic route.

Bewl Water Marathon

Head to Sussex for a run around the lake. This race is a two-lap course, so you can take in the details you missed on the first go around. Enjoy peaceful country lanes and woodland.

ASICS Greater Manchester Marathon

This marathon feels like a big city run, with closed, flat roads and a grand entrance near Old Trafford, but it doesn’t have the packed-like-sardines feeling of London. Best of both worlds, we think.

Blackpool Marathon

Oh, we do love to be beside the seaside, and the Blackpool marathon makes it easy. Take in the coast, the Pier and the Tower along this flat UK marathon route.

Great Welsh Marathon

Llanelli’s Millennium Coastal Park plays host to the Great Welsh Marathon, and it’s a great way to take in the scenery. It’s another flat course with plenty of room.

Milton Keynes Marathon

Enjoy a quick course through woodland, parks and boulevards. It’s not too far from London and finishes on a triumphant hero’s lap of the Championship football stadium.

Edinburgh Marathon

If you want the big crowds, head for the great UK marathon held in Edinburgh each year. Over 30 000 competitors run, and you’re guaranteed a spot if you were knocked back from the London race.

Three Forts Marathon

The brutal beauty, this marathon offers 3450 feet of elevations, and is closer to a trail run than a city marathon. Challenge yourself by climbing over stiles and negotiating fields. Not for the feint at heart.
