Why you should join a running club
If you’re struggling to keep yourself motivated, or just enjoy social activities more than being on your own, you might benefit from joining a running club. Finding a group of people who are passionate about the same things as you, and making appointments to meet them will encourage you to get out of the house more often. You might also find you’ll start challenging yourself to go further, faster with the encouragement of your new found running friends. There are a lot of benefits of joining a running club.
Don’t feel daunted by running clubs. There are groups that focus on different goals and it’s ok to check out different groups until you find the right one for you. There are beginner’s clubs and elite race training groups, along with social fun running groups.
Surrounding yourself with people who have similar goals can really motivate you to continue. If you love running, it can be hard to talk about it with people who aren’t interested. With a running club you can spend time chatting about goals, splits, tech and your latest pair of shoes without feeling self-conscious.
Joining a running club will expand the running universe for you. Some clubs switch up the types of running through the week. Some days might be trails, others could be endurance runs or time trials. You might discover different styles or new techniques. Taking tips from more experienced runners will help you improve your fitness, times and distance.
Are you competitive? If you’re not sure, joining a running club will probably show you. If you find yourself marking out the same runner each week and trying to beat them, or racing against your time from last week, you might just be competitive! Maybe this could be the entry point for you to try your first official race.
Running is often a solitary sport, and the benefits of getting some alone time can’t be understated. But running with a crowd provides great motivation. It never hurts to find others who care about similar things, and it’s always great to find new people that you like spending time with.
