A race in the tropics: the Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon

Who’s in the mood to hit the tropics for a relaxing holiday? We certainly are after reading about the Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon, held on Kauai Island (the Garden Island) in sunny Hawaii. Pack your bags for a warmer, sunnier climate and be prepared to run through some of the most breath-taking scenery you can imagine. Tropical rainforests, shimmering beaches and volcanic peaks await as you make your way around the 13.1 or 26.2 mile tracks. The price for running through ancient volcanic islands and soaking in stunning vistas is of course, brutal elevations. The full marathon asks runners to face a total elevation increase of over 2000ft. The half marathon competitors have less total elevation to face, although the first 6 or 7 miles are comprised of a consistent climb that is only relieved by a singular peak, before coasting down to the finish line. The full marathon has a cut off time of 8 hours, with the first 6.5 miles to be completed in 1:45. Walkers can participate in either distance while keeping the cut-off times in mind. Runners will have plenty of support along the course. The locals put on displays of local culture, including musical and dance performances. First aid stations and toilets are located at the finish line and at up to 22 waypoints. Water and electrolyte drinks are also provided. A pre-race expo will be held in the days before the race so there’s plenty of opportunity to soak up island culture and grab some race merchandise at the same time. Races are held in the lead up for children (‘keiki’) to encourage healthy living and community spirit. The Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon events have contributed over $120 000 to local charities since its inception. The Kauai Marathon and Half Marathon will be held on 2 September. Registrations are open now. Half marathon fees are USD$125, and USD$225 for the full marathon.
