How to recover from a toe injury picked up while running

2018-01-31

If you’re suffering from pain in your toes, you might have a runner’s big toe injury. It’s relatively uncommon to injure your toes through running, but it’s not impossible. There is a higher likelihood that your toe has been injured through other means, or is suffering from a degenerative issue, and that running is exacerbating the injury.

Causes of runner’s toe injury

There are a number of different reasons you might feel toe pain. Hallux valgus is related to bunions and hallux rigidus is a rigid or inflexible toe joint. Turf toe is a similar injury to a sprain, where the toe is hyper flexed due to impact (this is more common in football players but can occasionally impact runners). Sesamoids are very small bones (the size of sesame seeds) that function in a similar way to the kneecap. They can incur stress fractures in the same way leg and hip bones can.

Determining why you have toe pain

Because little is known about toe injuries, it can be challenging to identify the cause of the pain. Speak directly to your doctor who will be able to establish where the pain is coming from. You may need to have x-rays or an MRI to get a visual confirmation.

How to treat a toe injury

It’s difficult to suggest a single solution for toe pain as the causes are varied. In general, it’s a good idea to stop running until you have identified the cause. Try resting the joint by staying off it as much as possible. You may find orthotic inserts can help relieve pressure on the toes, particularly if you suffer from bunion pain. If there is a fracture you may be required to wear a cast to immobilise the joint. Don’t continue to run with a sore toe. Repeated impacts will only aggravate the injury and cause further damage.

    Helped me score more goals
When I first put my Enertor insoles in my football boots, I noticed the insole material that I took out was very flimsy and already had compressed to about a millimetre. The Enertor insoles felt like they gave much more protection and felt great. I scored 5 goals in my next match and then 3 in the following match! Thanks Enertor! I would recommend this product to anyone who wants more protection and wants to perform better.

    Very comfy
Found these very comfy and cushioned but did slightly supinate my feet. On one leg this felt fine on other it took a bit of getting use to. I used these at the end of an Olympic triathlon where the 10k run was very tough and the comfort was noted. Only problem being with the thickness of the insole, when I ran without socks this lifted my heel up in shoe and gave me a blister where I can normally run in my triathlon trainers without socks. I’d only use these for longer triathlons where I would definitely be wearing socks.

Good insoles, but bad for wide toed shoes
Though I could feel an improvement overall, I can tell they are not made for wide-toed shoes, like the Altras I run in. I’m sure they work great with traditional shoes, and look forward to using them in my next pair.

8 out of 10 for Enertor
8 out of 10 for Enertor. 4 years ago I had to stop teaching the exercise classes I have loved doing for years. I stepped out of bed and couldn’t walk because of the excruciating pain in the bottom of both feet. I had caught the dreaded plantar fasciitis. So started endless rounds of different therapies – physiotherapy, strapping, bespoke designed orthotics , acupuncture, shock therapy, massage, osteopath and of course the internet. I didn’t realize there were so many experts in the world of foot pain! I had my own Pilates business teaching the over 50s; Zumba and dance were included. All teaching had to stop because I couldn’t use my feet. Then I saw this fancy box of insoles talking about new technology, and a completely new material which reduces shockwaves through the foot, so decided to try them. After some effort trying to trim them to fit they seem to be doing the trick. No pain in the heels even after one whole day of wearing. I shall be recommending them to my clients.

Back on the street – and loving it
First run in these and I felt amazing. Had a spring in my step, and these soles gave me an added boost that will get me running again. Had a year off since my last marathon, with a knee injury. Fell out of love with running. Legs felt like lead. Put these in my shoes, knocked off a respectable 10k and have got the bug back. I’ve run 8 marathons in my time… clocked up thousands of training miles and have never been more excited about a new product… thought I’d left it all behind me, but that 9th and 10th marathon now look possible. Thanks

    Total Knee Replacement.
Had a replacement knee July 15 and have started to get back into sporting action, playing Badminton and touch rugby. These insoles most definitely eased the pressure on both knees cushioning the impact to the point of being very comfortable. Great absorption qualities for an old sportsman like me.

great for cushioning, but they hurt my feet
I really like the cushioning and bounce of these insoles, however, the way they are contoured, they make my feet sore on the outside of my foot, opposite the arch. The pain goes away after two or three miles so maybe my feet just need some time to adjust to them or maybe I need to try them in some different shoes. I’ve only had them a couple of weeks.

    No more pain!
These insoles have kept me injury free and have allowed me to be a faster runner. A year ago I had knee pain which kept me out of running for 6 weeks, my comeback was rough but since using these insoles I have had no issues. My feet never hurt and pain doesn’t radiate up to my knee. Couldn’t be happier with these insoles.
