What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is a painful injury that runners may suffer, but it can be avoided. Do you think you may have Morton’s neuroma? Read on to find out common symptoms, how to treat the condition and how to reduce the likelihood of developing it.

What is Morton’s neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is a painful thickening of the sheath around a nerve in the foot. It usually occurs between the 3rd and 4th toes. As the thickening continues it may develop into scar tissue that can have a distinct impact on how it feels to walk and run.

What are the symptoms

You may feel like you have a pebble in your shoe that causes a specific spot of pain between two toes. You might notice numbness or pain across the forefoot. If you squeeze your foot from both sides at the same time, you may feel a very sharp pain.

What are the causes?

Morton’s neuroma is the thickening of protective tissue around a nerve in the feet. It can thicken due to compression of metatarsal bones on the nerve. Commonly, this compression is caused by wearing shoes that are too tight. Consider high heel shoes, rock climbing shoes and compressive running shoes with narrow toe boxes. Flat or collapsed arches can also cause compression, leading to scar tissue development.

How to avoid Morton’s neuroma

If you have flat arches, consider wearing a performance sports insole. This will help to reduce impact pressure and assist the proper alignment of the metatarsal bones. Wear shoes with loose toe boxes where possible. If you notice any pains beginning in these areas, reduce your training load and rest frequently to reduce possible inflammation.

How to treat the condition

Wearing loose-fitting shoes and taking plenty of rest are the best ways to treat Morton’s neuroma. You may consider using anti-inflammatory drugs or even corticosteroid injections. Physiotherapy may be appropriate, and surgery to remove the scar tissue may be a last resort.

    Excellent insoles
Really comfy and provide excellent support and cushioning. I’ve used on two runs so far and feet have felt less tired afterwards.

    Ultra distance
Enertor insoles give excellent energy return! Fatigue is a main issues over running ultra distances, Enertor insoles definitely reduce this by cushioning heel impact and helping a better foot strike which is more mid-fore foot than heel. I’ll definitely be using them for future 50 & 100 Mile ultras.

    Best I’ve Used
Recently received my Enertor insoles and put them straight to use in my running shoes. Have used many pairs of insoles previously but these are by far the most comfortable. The heel cup holds the foot in position perfectly and the cushioning is superb without compromising on stability. Look forward to many miles in them. Recommended

These are absolutely fantastic!! I have suffered badly with shin splints for a number of years and I have finally found insoles that help with the pain and decrease the amount I suffer from them! Would recommend these to anyone!

    beneficial to road running
I have really enjoyed my enertor soles! its made road running so much more enjoyable and bearable on my knees! make sure you get the right size and wear them in too as your body will feel weird the first few times to wear them. Brilliant product!

    My back no longer hurts
Last year I suffered a herniated disk in my lower back, causing extreme nerve pain all the way down my left leg. I just got back into running this spring, and started with the insoles around the same time, and the pain has almost completely subsided. I can run further without pain than I’ve been able to since the injury. Definitely recommend these for comfort and support.

    Great for Flat Feet
I’ve gone through a lot of insoles to try to help my flat feet, and these are the best I’ve tried. They are a great balance of firm support and cushioning. I noticed that my feet did not hurt after a 5 mile run like they usually do. I also liked the slim profile, they do not add too much weight or bulk to your shoes. Overall, great solution for your feet!

I’m always skeptical of high end insoles, but these are the real deal. With a bigger build and 3 broken ankles I’m constantly suffering shin splints. Ran 5mi for the first time since before the surgery with little pain yesterday. No joke these things!
