A guide to the scenic Ljubljana Marathon

2018-05-21

The Ljubljana Marathon comes from humble beginnings as a race for local runners in Slovenia. Over time it has become a drawcard on the international marathon circuit, now drawing over 26 000 participants each year. Participants can choose to run a half or full marathon through the many historical streets of the city.

If you make your way to Ljubljana, you will find plenty of accommodation and tourism package tours available. A race expo is also held alongside the race festivities. Additional activities include a 10K run, half marathon hand bike race and the ‘lumpi run’ – a cheerful, non-competitive 200m jaunt for children under the age of 5. The crowds love to support the runners and can be found cheering along many of the main stretches of the route.

Be aware that the weather is a serious consideration. As the races are held in late October each year, it is very cold, and runners often face start temperatures of less than 10 degrees Celsius. Participants are advised to take this into account when planning their running gear and hydration needs on the day.

The race participants will have plenty of official support on the course, as there are 8 refreshment stations spread out across the track, along with 6 water-only stations. Plenty of first aid support will be available to runners at each station as well as the finishing line. There is a cut off time of 5 hours for the full Ljubljana Marathon, and runners who have not completed 20km within 2 hours 15 minutes will be asked to make their way directly to the finishing line. The race is an IAAF Bronze level road race.

Registrations are now open for the 2018 Ljubljana Marathon and half marathon. At only €35-€40 to enter, it’s a low-cost way to start your marathon running career.

Back on the street – and loving it
First run in these and I felt amazing. Had a spring in my step, and these soles gave me an added boost that will get me running again. Had a year off since my last marathon, with a knee injury. Fell out of love with running. Legs felt like lead. Put these in my shoes, knocked off a respectable 10k and have got the bug back. I’ve run 8 marathons in my time… clocked up thousands of training miles and have never been more excited about a new product… thought I’d left it all behind me, but that 9th and 10th marathon now look possible. Thanks

    Amazing!
I’ve been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis for years and these insoles are incredible. I was starting to have a flare up again but since I’ve put these in my shoes, it has subsided. I run about 30-35 miles a week and they’ve held up really, really well!

    Great Insoles
I bought the insoles during a 50% off sale to try it out. I just started running in them and had to get used to it the first few times. I feel like they give me an extra cushion during my landing. They squeak a little bit but I’m hoping that goes away after a few more runs.

    Total Knee Replacement.
Had a replacement knee July 15 and have started to get back into sporting action, playing Badminton and touch rugby. These insoles most definitely eased the pressure on both knees cushioning the impact to the point of being very comfortable. Great absorption qualities for an old sportsman like me.
