Running Safety Tips – How to run safely

Running is often a solitary activity. As free as we feel when we run, there are risks and dangers that present themselves. This article will cover a few of the most common safety issues runners face, and actions you can take to keep yourself safe while you’re out there.   Traffic Drivers can fall into the habit of scanning for cars, not for people on foot. One of the biggest risks to runners is being struck by a car. Try these tips to increase running safety:  
  • Wear high visibility clothing with reflective strips and even a headlamp, especially at low visibility times like dawn, dusk and night.
  • Run against the traffic, so you are facing the oncoming cars. Do this so you can see what the traffic is doing and take steps to avoid collisions.
  • Never assume a driver has seen you. Even if you have right of way, wait for the traffic to pass (particularly if a car is about to make a left turn).
  Stay in touch A lot of risks can be reduced with a little communication and situational awareness. Staying in touch should increase your levels of running safety.  
  • Don’t run with headphones in at night or in isolated areas. It will reduce your ability to react to situations around you.
  • Let someone know where you’ll be running and what time you’re expected to return.
  • Take your phone with you, in case you need assistance.
  Female runners It's unfortunate that female runners should be prepared to take greater precautions, but it’s a reality for many. Along with the above tips, try these:  
  • Try to run with a partner where possible. Even running with one other person will reduce the risk of unwanted attention.
  • Vary your routes by reversing your usual courses occasionally. Change your start time to be an hour earlier or later some days. A reliable routine can make you a predictable target.
  • Take additional safety precautions, such as carrying pepper spray or taking some basic self-defence classes.
  • Take well lit paths in populated areas. Try to avoid creating a situation where you will be isolated from assistance.
