8 best wild running tracks in the UK

Running through the concrete jungle is one way to improve your fitness, but it doesn’t always give you much to look at. Take a break from your normal routine (and route!) and head for green spaces. Wild running brings fresh air, new scenery and new challenges, too. Check out our favourite wild running tracks in the UK.

Broadway Tower, Cotswold Way

This 3.5 mile out-and-return is a decently challenging track up to the 18th Broadway Tower. It’s a steep ascent of around 175 metres, but the good news is that it’s downhill all the way home. Take a moment to catch your breath and admire the view from the top.

Dunwich Heath, Suffolk

Start and finish at the Vulcan Arms, Sizewell, and head out on this 9 mile run along the heath-lands. This is a peaceful run, and it meanders through country lanes and long the coast. A great one for unwinding.

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Another short run of 3.5 miles, this trail takes you across the moor. This is an area with plenty of visible history from stone circles to tors, and great vistas from the higher elevations.

Wendover Woods, The Chilterns

Take the train out to Wendover and run freely through the woodlands. The 6.5 miles of trail gives you ancient beech trees and views across the vales.

The Howgills, Yorkshire Dales

This secluded run takes you away from everything and gives you a quiet 6 miles to hear yourself think. It’s beautiful, with a mixture of fell, trail and track. It’s a real wild running experience with plenty of tough elevations to master.

West Highland Way

There’s a fantastic section of the West Highland Way that can be covered in one long day or split over two. All up it’s 17 miles from the Inveroran Hotel down to Kinlochleven. The first half is gorgeous and the second half daunting.

Rhossili Bay, Gower

If you enjoy beach running, take this 6.5 mile trail along Rhossili Bay and the nearby Down. The views are exceptional, the trail is great underfoot and sea air is reviving.

Beachy Head, Sussex

Find your way to the Beachy Head Countryside Centre and head out on a 15 miler at the end of the South Downs Way. Woodland, chalk cliffs, grassy fields and a shingle beach await.
