How to mentally recover from a bad race

2018-01-31

We’ve all had them. Sometimes you know from the moment you wake up that the run is going to be a struggle. Sometimes you head out full of confidence and come limping home after a fall. And that’s just regular training runs.

Does anything really compare to the feeling waking up with the flu on race day, or registering a DNF thanks to a vicious cramp? It’s difficult to recover mentally from knocks like this, but it’s not impossible. Here’s how.

Let it feel bad

It’s ok to feel disappointment, anger and sadness after having a poor performance. Having the right running mentality lets you prepare for set backs. If you’ve invested hours and hours of training, it’s natural to feel let down. Find safe ways to express those feelings.  This is not the place to stop processing – the next step is to…

Identify a plus

Something good must have come from the run, even if it ended badly. Are you satisfied with how your training went? Did you keep running further than you thought you could? Maybe there’s some proof in there about your tenacity or perseverance. Find something good out of the experience and focus on that.  It is one of the keys to maintain a good running mentality even when things are not going as you planned.

Take a breath and reflect

Once you’ve given yourself a week or so to come to terms with the day, it’s time to look back over what happened with an analytical eye. Can you identify what went wrong? Is there something you could have done differently or was it an unpredictable occurrence? Check back over your nutrition and training journals. Change what you can and forget the rest.

New goals, new victories

Hopefully identifying the cause of your poor performance has given you renewed motivation for a comeback race. Don’t let one bad day put you off running for good. If you bonked on your first marathon, maybe regain your confidence by signing up for a half. Schedule a couple of ‘easy wins’ to prove to yourself that you can still race.

    Ultra distance
Enertor insoles give excellent energy return! Fatigue is a main issues over running ultra distances, Enertor insoles definitely reduce this by cushioning heel impact and helping a better foot strike which is more mid-fore foot than heel. I’ll definitely be using them for future 50 & 100 Mile ultras.

wont fit in spikes, but great for training shoes
These are too thick to fit in track spikes, but they feel great in my training flats and regular running shoes. They even brought back to life, some shoes that I thought were worn out.

    Great insoles
After experiencing plantar fasciitis in my right foot, I would try anything. These insoles are decreasing my pain and offer nice support. I would recommend these to friends and other runners!

Insoles put pep in your step.
I have never run with any type of insert in my shoes, but that being said I did feel like these made a difference. The pair of shoes I used them in had quite a few miles on them, but I can safely say that the inserts made the shoes feel springier, peppier, and overall “newer” feeling. They still feel this way after several weeks of use and I’m looking forward to being able to try them out on a timed run. Overall, with my limited experience I would still recommend them to someone who is looking to experiment with adding an insert into their existing running shoes.

    Excellent Insole
The insoles felt really great. However, in some shoes it would raise your foot position height, higher than was comfortable, and so there was a greater risk of the shoe falling off due to the thickness of the insoles. But otherwise they were really good, nice and comfortable.

    Awesome
Huge positive difference vs. Superfeet. Energy transfer lasts the whole day / workout.

I have used them for badminton and feel less pressure on the knees. Only problem they are a bit thick for some shoes. Great in walking boots where insoles are removable. My husband also has a pair and finds them comfortable but not experiencing any difference in performance.

    Amazing!
I’ve been dealing with Plantar Fasciitis for years and these insoles are incredible. I was starting to have a flare up again but since I’ve put these in my shoes, it has subsided. I run about 30-35 miles a week and they’ve held up really, really well!

    Helped me run longer..yay!
I have been dealing with some weird hip/knee pain running for the past year or so. I was limited to getting in maybe 3 or 4 miles before serious pain set in so I thought I would give these a shot because I have tried just about everything else short of the doctor. I have upped my milage to 9 1/2 miles (so far) with less pain than I have had in months so that was super exciting. It feels like they helped take some impact off of my knee and helped stabilize my hip. The pain isn’t gone but these definitely made a difference in my comfort so that is a step in the right direction. Big thumbs up for these insoles!

Back running on roads for the first time in years!
I was a bit sceptical at first but these Enertor insoles really do make a MASSIVE difference! I had knee surgery about 2 years ago and have been unable to run on roads since but replacing my Asics standard insoles for Enertor insoles has totally changed the way my knees feel when I run. I’m now aiming to beat my 5k PB in a couple of months – great work, thanks Enertor!
