This is a book for runners to have on the night stand. It’s a leisurely but engaging read, skilfully written by one of Japan’s leading authors (who happens to also love running with a passion). Murakami explores his training program as he prepares to participate in the New York marathon, but uses this framework to support plenty of stories and wisdom along the way. Truly fascinating.
Racing the Antelope: What Animals Can Teach Us About Running and Life, by Bernd Heinrich
Racing the Antelope is a unique book for runners. It draws on anthropology, biology and psychology to explain how we run, and why. As Heinrich prepared to race a 100K Ultra, he looked to the animal kingdom to shed light on endurance, speed and perseverance. The end result draws together his research and his race experience with some startling conclusions.
Running and Being: The Total Experience, by George Sheehan
Written in 1978, this book has informed generations of runners and guided them toward a philosophy of personal improvement through sports and play. It’s a richly rewarding book that brings together Sheehan’s own experience with training and racing with the knowledge of many other sportsmen of the day. Running and Being is one that plenty credit as life-changing, and certainly many a PB can be attributed to the influence of the book on the runner’s mental outlook.
